Day 14 - Insert Title Here

I couldn't even come up with a title today. Am I losing my ability to be witty and sarcastic?!?

Ok, let's hope that doesn't happen.

I've been applying to jobs, and I've been sticking in the realm of project management. Not exclusively, but that's where most of my searches have landed me. I'm also about to wrap up a course on IAM on Coursera, so I've really been trying to make moves.

Something that I realized is that project management (and similar) seem to exist at every organization, so I have a lot of options for where to apply, and I can hopefully find myself in a field that I'm excited about. I can do project management at a company for green energy or supporting educational changes or whatever. I also don't want to be pie-in-the-sky about it. I submitted an application to Microsoft, so hold onto your Copilot, I might be helping to manage that next.

Wildly changing topics, I'm feeling better than I was yesterday. I made it to my local library to talk to a NY State of Health Navigator so I can get some ideas on what health insurance might cost me if I don't get a job soon. I stopped by and saw 2 of my favorite old ladies in the neighborhood, and they both gave me hugs when they heard about my layoff. I also picked some tomatoes today, so you know. A big day.

Actually, my library gave me a little bit of hope today. It was poppin. It had been closed for the past 2 weeks or so for the parking lot to be repaved, and today was the first day it was open! Every librarian was there to check in books. There was a line easily 10 people deep at the information desk. My school district goes back to school tomorrow, so families were in there returning their books. After I talked to the health rep guy, I grabbed a book about granny squares. I wonder if I can turn them into a cute pair of shorts...

Lastly, a quick turn towards some life inventory questions. I liked Tim's questions, but I was starting to feel like they were geared towards people who were set on starting their own business. I'll be honest - I don't know if I have the discipline for that. I like to bake, but could I do it regularly and consistently enough to open a bakery? Or even a side business? One that would be viable? I like to crochet, but I haven't even figured out how to put granny squares together yet (which is going to make a pair of shorts out of them challenging). My husband started his own job. I'm here for the steady and the health insurance.

So I looked for some new questions. Shout out to Robert Walters for this list. His first question is: What do you actually like about work?

In my most recent positions, I liked that I mainly interacted with coworkers or other internal groups, and sometimes vendors. I was losing patience fast with students when I was a hall director, and I'm not sure I loved answering the phone at a call center. It seems to me that maybe "customer-focused" jobs are not my strong suit. I like digging in and being knowledgeable about something. I also like being able to plan ahead, which is probably why I liked using SAFe methodologies at my most recent job, because we planned out 12 weeks at a time, and came back to it every 3 weeks to make sure it still made sense.

Without realizing it today, I put the answer to this question before I even asked the question. I liked project management. I always knew I wasn't going to retire from being a Scrum Master (if I ever even get to retire lolol), but the field itself works for me!

Wow. Look at that. An epiphany and some tomatoes. A big day for sure.

Day 66 - Revelation

I’m not sure what triggered the conversations. I talked to 3 women last week who had all been diagnosed with ADHD late in life. One of them was my sister, and that’s important, because guess what ADHD has? A strong hereditary link. The other two were girlfriends - very different careers. Children at very different stages of their life. Different ages for their diagnosis. And while the wording was different, the message was the same - probably time for you to get evaluated. Actually, I think when I told my sister “I think I have ADHD,” her reply was something close to “no fucking shit.” You know, lovingly. There’s an episode of How I Met Your Mother where the sound of glass shattering plays whenever someone notices an annoying habit of one of the other characters. I tend to hear it in my head when I feel a lightbulb moment, and this past week has been nothing but glass shattering in my head. Why did I stay up until 1am in high school to type out my chemistry labs when no one else was do...

Day 1 - here I go again

In first or second grade, I found a book in the school library of rhymes and old wives' tales about weather predictions. It was things like "Red sky at night, sailor's delight.” I was hooked. From that point on, I wanted to study the weather. In second grade, I begged my teacher to let me do the weather report for the classroom at least once a week. I was obsessed with a book about how to conserve water. I studied maps, and went to Lake Ontario with Dad to look for waterspouts (I'm embarrassed to say that despite the fact I've spent most of my life on the Great Lakes, I still haven't seen one.) In 4th grade, the dad of one of my classmates worked in the control tower of our airport. This was pre-2001, so he arranged a tour for the class. We got to see some pretty cool things and overheard pilots talking. This drew me in, and by the time I watched a special about the Hartsfield-Jackson airport in Atlanta with my dad, I was so sure I would work at an airport. In ...

Day 120 - Dessert

I'm feeling a little off today. Not just because I'm still dealing with the congestion from whatever this sickness was from over the weekend, but because I'm still unemployed. I think I just don't know what to do next. I had an interview yesterday for a departmental supervisor at a local store, but it didn't go great. I was very out of practice for the interview, which was a surprise to me, and the interview was weird. It was clear that the interviewer had a script that needed to be read and answered in order. None of my jokes landed, and they were funny. I'm funny! Or at least witty. And when I asked some follow-up questions about one of their questions, they didn't have an answer for me. It made me question if I even want this job, and that's the first time that's happened so far this job search. I've also only had 4 interviews (out of 80+ applications), so I guess I haven't had a lot of say in what position is right for me. Today, I was, a...
