Day 35 - Rapture

If you don't spend as much time online as I do these days (and hopefully you don't), you may not have heard, but 'The Rapture' was supposed to be today.

At this point in my life, I've survived Y2K, the end of the Mayan calendar, and maybe 1 or 2 other raptures, so I didn't really expect it to happen, but I was disappointed it didn't happen this time. I figured if at least some of the population was raptured, there would be some immediate job openings that would need to be filled.

But here we are.

I spent about an hour with my old ladies today. A lot of you liked them, so I think I'm going to have to tell them they're internet famous, which I suspect they'll think is hilarious. I was trying to tell them tonight that they can watch the late night shows on YouTube the next day, and they were like "eh, I don't know how to do that stuff." And I said to them "Oh my god, just call me, I'm free during the days now." They laughed and said they would.

Like I said in my last post about them, they're sweet. They gave my dogs too many treats tonight, and gave them pets like I've never loved them at all in their entire lives. Very grandma coded. And I know their political leanings, but the reason we were talking about YouTube is because they were very excited about Dancing with the Stars, and the return of Jimmy Kimmel. My one girl said she watches the first 15 minutes of Stephen Colbert while taping the first 15 minutes of Kimmel, and once Colbert finishes his monologue, she watches Kimmel's monologue. And I was like... "just catch it on YouTube." Anyway, I hope they take me up on it.

I've got a bunch of plans over the next couple of days, so hopefully I get over this stupid cold I have right now. I'm hoping to hit up yoga both tomorrow and Thursday, a "Women in Tech" networking event and dinner with a friend tomorrow, and then a "Mixology and Finance" event on Thursday. In between all of that (which really isn't that much), I need to find time to keep applying to jobs.

It shouldn't be that hard to find time for unless they're all as terrible as the one I filled out for NYS today. I mean, a few years ago when you had to submit a resume plus the entire application... which only asked about what was already on your resume. I will say, enough people must have complained about that process that very few applications are like that anymore, which is delightful. It's usually one or the other now, and I can live with that.

This NYS one? Their technology has not caught up. Their website is not leading the way in anything, I'll tell you that much. I had to answer questions about my license, a space for "additional remarks," a full 3 personal references. They only had a space for 3 jobs for you to list, but said we needed to list... all our jobs? They didn't give a timeframe, or number of jobs, just "list them." They only gave space for 3, told us to list more on an additional page, and that a resume wouldn't count. SORRY WHAT?

So they got 3 jobs and my resume. They didn't get the addresses of my personal references because even I don't know the addresses of my personal references. What are you going to send them? A carrier pigeon with a reference check? Get out of here.

Maybe I'm self-selecting myself out of NYS jobs. If I can't handle the job application process, and the red tape there, maybe I'm not cut out for the bureaucracy of a state job. But they have good benefits.

So just like with the old ladies and YouTube, hopefully NYS will take me up on it.

Day 66 - Revelation

I’m not sure what triggered the conversations. I talked to 3 women last week who had all been diagnosed with ADHD late in life. One of them was my sister, and that’s important, because guess what ADHD has? A strong hereditary link. The other two were girlfriends - very different careers. Children at very different stages of their life. Different ages for their diagnosis. And while the wording was different, the message was the same - probably time for you to get evaluated. Actually, I think when I told my sister “I think I have ADHD,” her reply was something close to “no fucking shit.” You know, lovingly. There’s an episode of How I Met Your Mother where the sound of glass shattering plays whenever someone notices an annoying habit of one of the other characters. I tend to hear it in my head when I feel a lightbulb moment, and this past week has been nothing but glass shattering in my head. Why did I stay up until 1am in high school to type out my chemistry labs when no one else was do...

Day 1 - here I go again

In first or second grade, I found a book in the school library of rhymes and old wives' tales about weather predictions. It was things like "Red sky at night, sailor's delight.” I was hooked. From that point on, I wanted to study the weather. In second grade, I begged my teacher to let me do the weather report for the classroom at least once a week. I was obsessed with a book about how to conserve water. I studied maps, and went to Lake Ontario with Dad to look for waterspouts (I'm embarrassed to say that despite the fact I've spent most of my life on the Great Lakes, I still haven't seen one.) In 4th grade, the dad of one of my classmates worked in the control tower of our airport. This was pre-2001, so he arranged a tour for the class. We got to see some pretty cool things and overheard pilots talking. This drew me in, and by the time I watched a special about the Hartsfield-Jackson airport in Atlanta with my dad, I was so sure I would work at an airport. In ...

Day 120 - Dessert

I'm feeling a little off today. Not just because I'm still dealing with the congestion from whatever this sickness was from over the weekend, but because I'm still unemployed. I think I just don't know what to do next. I had an interview yesterday for a departmental supervisor at a local store, but it didn't go great. I was very out of practice for the interview, which was a surprise to me, and the interview was weird. It was clear that the interviewer had a script that needed to be read and answered in order. None of my jokes landed, and they were funny. I'm funny! Or at least witty. And when I asked some follow-up questions about one of their questions, they didn't have an answer for me. It made me question if I even want this job, and that's the first time that's happened so far this job search. I've also only had 4 interviews (out of 80+ applications), so I guess I haven't had a lot of say in what position is right for me. Today, I was, a...
